Points
Up to 2 points off your NJ record
- Once every five years
- Only if you have points when you finish. It can’t take you below zero, and points can’t be banked.
- It does not lower an MVC surcharge.
New Jersey online defensive driving
Six hours, online, at your own pace. Finish an NJ-approved course and the MVC may take up to 2 points off your record. Pajamas fully permitted.
Pending NJ MVC approval. Point and insurance benefits apply once the course is approved.
Four steps. Fewer than the average jughandle.
Name, NJ driver license number, date of birth, address, gender and eye color: the details the MVC uses to credit your record.
One price. The course unlocks the moment you pay.
Six hours online, 10 modules, at your own pace. Pause for a break and your progress is saved. No fast-forward, no ads, and no extended-warranty pitch.
Final exam (80% to pass, two more tries if you need them). You get your certificate, and we report your completion to the MVC for you.
Every so often the course asks a quick question from your registration to confirm it’s really you. It’s required, and it protects the value of your certificate. Not a pop quiz on your own life, promise.
The real benefits, with the fine print in normal-size font.

*Benefits apply to NJ MVC-approved courses. Blinker First is pending approval. This course is voluntary and doesn’t replace the Driver Improvement Program or the Probationary Driver Program.
Tailgating is 5 points in NJ, same as going 30 over.
The car in front of you isn’t getting there any faster because you’re closer. Neither are you.
10 modules, 360 minutes of instruction. Quiz and exam time doesn’t count toward the six hours, so all six are instruction.
Points, the 3-step collision formula, and why we say “crash,” not “accident.”
Road rage, aggressive drivers, and how to be the calm one.
Stopping distance, the three-second-plus rule, and your space cushion.
Phones, NJ’s handheld law, and drowsy driving.
BAC limits, implied consent, and planning a sober ride every time.
Jughandles, traffic circles, merges. Keep right, pass left.
Crosswalks, school buses, cyclists, big trucks, Move Over, and yes, the ice cream truck.
Rain, snow, ice, fog, glare, and clearing snow and ice before you go.
Signals, horn, lights, seat belts, and safety tech without over-trusting it.
What to do at a crash scene, GDL rules, and your own safe-driving plan.
Plus a downloadable student study guide with a one-page summary and short worksheet for every module.
Not yet. The course is pending NJ Motor Vehicle Commission approval, and nobody can take it for credit until it’s approved. The benefits described on this page apply to NJ-approved defensive driving courses. We’ll update this page the moment that’s us.
Six hours of instruction across 10 modules. NJ requires at least six hours for an online defensive driving course, and an on-screen timer keeps track for you. Take breaks whenever you want; your progress is saved. There’s no fast-forward, though. It’s the one road in New Jersey where speeding genuinely won’t help.
Up to 2. When you finish an NJ-approved course, the MVC may remove two points from your driving record. You can get the reduction only once every five years, and only if you have points on your record when you finish. Points can’t be banked for later, so a clean record stays a clean record.
No. MVC says the course credit doesn’t reduce the point total it uses to calculate surcharges. Surcharges are their own thing. We’d rather tell you now than have you find out from a bill.
Maybe. New Jersey law provides for a reduction in your auto insurance rate after you complete an approved defensive driving course. It lasts three years, starting with your next policy period, and ends early if your license is suspended or you pick up four or more points. Your insurer sets the amount, so call your agent and ask. We don’t promise a number, because we’re not your insurance company.
No. When you finish, we report your completion directly to the MVC. MVC doesn’t accept certificates sent in by drivers, so this part is handled for you. One less trip to an agency.
Each module ends with a short quiz you need to pass before the next one opens, and every answer comes with an explanation. The final exam draws questions from every module. You need 80% to pass, and if the first try doesn’t go your way, you get two more.
No. This course is voluntary. If the MVC has sent you a notice requiring the Driver Improvement Program or the Probationary Driver Program, this course doesn’t replace it. Follow that notice’s instructions too.
